Summary: This study describes effects of alpha-amylase (α-amylase) on human neuroblastoma (NB) cell lines. NB is the most common malignancy diagnosed in infants younger than 12 months. Some clinical observations revealed an inverse association between the risk of NB development and breastfeeding. Already in the beginning of the 20th century, α-amylase, which is present in breast milk, was shown to have anticancer properties. Data presented in this study shows that pancreatic α-amylase inhibits cell proliferation and directly impacts glucose uptake in the human NB cell lines. Changes in glucose metabolism are recognized as being one of the hallmarks of cancer. HoloMonitor M4 was used to monitor the effect of α-amylase on cell motility (speed, accumulated distance) and proliferation (direct cell count) of neuroblastoma cells. Time-lapse images were taken every 5 minutes for 72 hours to analyze kinetic motility and proliferation of single cells and prepare cell videos using the AppSuite software.
